Fall 2024 Advising Chats

Meeting the Needs of Student Veterans

  • Date: Monday, September 16 (right before a Social)

  • Speaker: Jana Moser Moore, Director for Office of Veteran Affairs
  • Description: This session will define which students fall within the term “student veterans” at Viginia Tech.  We will then focus our discussion on how their experiences can impact the student they are now in contrast to their service.  You will learn more about their primary challenges and needs as well as the skills they bring to the classroom.  We will conclude with a discussion on some best practices when working with student veterans.

Supporting Disabled Students at Virginia Tech

  • Date: Thursday, November 14
  • Time: 3:00 - 4:30 PM
  • Location: Zoom
  • Speaker: Victoria Lael, Instructor and Director of Undergraduate Studies for Human Development and Family Science
  • Description: Learn information and strategies that will help you facilitate connection, belonging, and academic success for disabled students at Virginia Tech. Learn what ableism is and how to avoid it; discuss how to talk about disability in affirming ways; and gain access to resources that can be shared with disabled students seeking support at Virginia Tech.  

Inside the Locker Room: Tracking Trends of Athletic Academic Advising

  • Date: Thursday, December 5
  • Time: 2:00 - 3:30 PM. This session will be offered in-person only and will have an attendance capacity of 40 people. Please RSVP online: the first 40 registrants will be notified in November to confirm their attendance so those on the waitlist can be notified by December.
  • Location: 5th Floor of Lane Stadium (West Side).
  • Speaker: Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS)
  • Description: During this session, we will explore the ever-changing landscape of college athletics. Join us to discuss how this impacts our student-athletes, the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) staff, and the VT advising community. We will spend time focusing on the impacts of the NCAA transfer portal and academic eligibility. This session will also include tours of the Quillen Family Academic Center (SAASS Office).
